God according to Valluvar

அகர முதல² எழுத்து எல்லாம்¹ ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே⁴ உலகு³.1

All letters begin with Akaram (A = அ); (likewise) this world begins with the ancient God as the first. 1

கற்றதனால் ஆய பயனென்கொல்³ வால் அறிவன்¹
நல்தாள் தொழாஅர் எனின்².2

God is Pure Intellect. If worship is not proffered at the feet of God  the Pure Intellect, what is the use of learning? 2

மலர்மிசை ஏகினான்¹ மாண் அடி சேர்ந்தார்²
நில மிசை நீடு வாழ்வார்³.3

He dwells in the lotus of the heart. Those who surrendered at his supreme feet, will live long in this world in prosperity. 3

வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலான் அடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல.4

Desire and aversion are not His. Those who take  refuge at His feet, have no suffering. 5

இருள் சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா⁴ இறைவன்¹
பொருள்சேர்² புகழ் புரிந்தார் மாட்டு³.5

The All-abider without likes and dislikes protects (and preserves) all. Realizing His greatness and worshipping Him, ignorance-bound dual deeds will not afflict him. 5

பொறிவாயில் ஐந்து அவித்தான்¹ பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறி நின்றார்² நீடுவாழ் வார்³.6

The God has extinguished (the desires of) the five senses: Skin, tongue, eyes, nose, and ears (Touch sense, taste, Vision, Smell and Hearing). Those who follow a life without a lie in the path of good conduct will lead a happy and joyous life. 6

தனக்கு உவமை இல்லாதான்¹ தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க்கு அல்லால்²
மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது³.7

Those who did not take refuge at the feet of the Incomparable will find it hard to remove the afflictions of the mind.

அற ஆழி அந்தணன் தாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கு அல்லால்¹
பிற ஆழி நீந்தல் அரிது².8

Those who did not take refuge at the feet of the Ocean of Dharma and the Gracious One, cannot swim the ocean of evil (to reach the shore of freedom).8

கோள் இல் பொறியின் குணமிலவே³ எண்குணத்தான்¹
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை².9

He is of eight attributes. That head (person) who does not bow at the feet of Him is of no use like the effete (dead, useless) senses.

பிறவிப் பெரும் கடல் நீந்துவர்¹ நீந்தார்³
இறைவன் அடி சேராதவர்².10

People swim in the great ocean of birth. Those who do not surrender at the feet of Bhagavan cannot swim (to reach the shore of liberation).
