அறத்துப்பால். இயல்: துறவறவியல். அதிகாரம்: கூடாவொழுக்கம் (Improper Conduct for Ascetics)
Improper or immoral conduct is the bane of the ascetic, who faces many desires of carnal and material nature. The false recluse lives like an epicure in his most private moments, enjoying the little pleasures (= சிற்றின்பம் = Sensual pleasure). His public persona is a facade of nonindulgence, and his private persona is a plethora of indulgence. Therefore, the ascetic should be cautious. The others should exercise caution and not fall prey to the false ascetic.
வஞ்ச மனத்தான் படிற்றொழுக்கம் பூதங்கள்
ஐந்தும் அகத்தே நகும்.
வஞ்ச மனத்தான் படிற்று ஒழுக்கம் deceiver’s mind false conduct
பூதங்கள் ஐந்தும் அகத்தே நகும் the elements five inside laugh.
வஞ்சம் = deceit. படிற்று = false.
271. The five elements laugh inside at the deceiver’s mind and wrong conduct.
வானுயர் தோற்றம் எவன்செய்யும் தன்னெஞ்சம்
தான்அறி குற்றப் படின்.
வான் உயர் தோற்றம் எவன் செய்யும் Of what use is the sky-high guise of asceticism
தான் அறி குற்றம் தன் நெஞ்சம் படின் knowing in the mind of one’s own crime
272. Of what use is the sky-high guise of asceticism if his mind knows his crime.
வலியில் நிலைமையான் வல்லுருவம் பெற்றம்
புலியின்தோல் போர்த்துமேய்ந் தற்று.
வலி இல் நிலைமையான் வல் உருவம் powerless imposter’s ascetic garb
பெற்றம் புலியின் தோல் போர்த்து மேய்ந்தற்று Cow tiger’s skin garb graze. பெற்றம் = cow
273. Powerless imposter’s ascetic garb is like the cow grazing with a tiger’s skin.
தவமறைந்து அல்லவை செய்தல் புதல்மறைந்து
வேட்டுவன் புள்சிமிழ்த் தற்று.
தவம் மறைந்து அல்லவை செய்தல் Hiding behind the ascetic persona and doing antipodal acts
வேட்டுவன் புதல் மறைந்து புள் (=bird) சிமிழ்த்தற்று (= trap) is like a fowler hiding in the bush and catching the bird with a trap.

பற்றற்றேம் என்பார் படிற்றொழுக்கம் எற்றெற்றென்று
ஏதம் பலவுந் தரும்.
பற்று அற்றேம் என்பார் படிற்று ஒழுக்கம் They declare giving up attachment. But the deceitful conduct
எற்று எற்று என்று ஏதம் பலவும் தரும் Pity me, pity me, saying & suffering in many a grief
எற்று = What a pity, Alas, Self-pity
ஏதம் = grief, decadence, depravity, wrongdoing, immoral behavior
275. The false ascetic declares giving up attachment. But the deceitful conduct brings much grief, and they go, ‘Pity me, pity me.’
நெஞ்சின் துறவார் துறந்தார்போல் வஞ்சித்து
வாழ்வாரின் வன்கணார் இல்.
நெஞ்சின் துறவார் Those who never gave up
துறந்தார் போல் வஞ்சித்து வாழ்வாரின் but act like a relinquisher (ascetic) and live a life of deceit. வன்கணார் இல்: hard-hearted none.
276. Relinquishers, they are not, but act like one (ascetic), live a life of deceit and are none other than the hard-hearted.
புறங்குன்றி கண்டனைய ரேனும் அகங்குன்றி
முக்கிற் கரியார் உடைத்து.
குன்றிப் புறம் கண்டு அனையரேனும் though such ones (the imposter) appear like the Red rosary bead
குன்றி மூக்கின் அகம் கரியார் உடைத்து they are black inside as the black nose of the rosary bead.
277. Though such ones (the imposters) appear like the Red rosary bead, they are black inside as the black nose of the rosary bead.
மனத்தது மாசாக மாண்டார் நீராடி
மறைந்தொழுகு மாந்தர் பலர்.
மாசு மனத்தது ஆக Having the tainted mind
மாண்டார் நீர் ஆடி Taking ritual bath like the great men
மறைந்து செல்லும் மாந்தர் உலகத்துப் பலர் hiding men are aplenty in the world
278. Having tainted heart, (mind, and soul), and showing off like the great men of Tapas in doing ritual ablution, in this world, there are a plethora of imposters hiding in plain sight.
கணைகொடிது யாழ்கோடு செவ்விதுஆங் கன்ன
வினைபடு பாலால் கொளல்.
கணை கொடிது யாழ் கோடு செவ்விது Even a straight arrow is cruel. A crooked Yāzh (stringed musical instrument) makes sweet music.
ஆங்கு அன்ன வினைபடு பாலால் கொளல் Therefore, judge men by their deeds.

மழித்தலும் நீட்டலும் வேண்டா உலகம்
பழித்தது ஒழித்து விடின்.
மழித்தலும் நீட்டலும் வேண்டா Shaving the head or lengthening the hair are unnecessary,
உலகம் பழித்தது ஒழித்து விடின் as long as one sheds the censured acts declared by the world.
