Once upon a time, Basmasuran, a demon by birth, performed penance for a
long time. Impressed by his effort, Siva appeared before him and said,
“What is the boon you have on your mind?”
Basmasuran: When I place my hand on whomsoever, that person should burn
and be reduced to ashes.
Siva acquiesced to his request.
Siva: So be it.
Having gained the boon, he wanted to test its veracity and potency. He
looked for a suitable victim to test his diabolical boon. He did not
have to go any further. The victim was right before him. Yes, his
intended victim was no other than the boon-giving Siva himself. He tried
to place his hand on the head of Siva. Siva concealed his own true form
and reduced himself as a heap of mud. Siva changed his forms from flower
to mountain, sea, river… just to escape the demon’s palm touching his
head. He assumed a multitude of beguiling forms. He presented himself as
a plant with thousands of fruits. The Asura who followed Siva morphed
into a ram, vowed to eat and began eating
the plants and fruits. Witnessing this catastrophe and realizing Siva’s
helplessness and dependency, Annai Paramesvari (Siva’s other half)
supplicated to her elder brother Perumal. Vishnu Perumal took the form
of
a voluptuous celestial damsel
(Rambhā)
and appeared before the demon.
Having taken up with the drop-dead celestial beauty, the Asura
rushed to embrace her.
Rambhā stopped him and addressed the Asura,
“How could a disgusting you possibly touch me? First, you take good
cleansing bath and then come to me.” The demon was searching hither and
thither for water.
Because of the grace of God, there was not a drop of water anywhere in
the world. He was standing by a mooing cow. He collected the cow’s urine
in a half-shell of a coconut and rushed to Rambhā.
Rambhā: “I realize cow’s urine is also water. Take the urine on your
palm and rub it on your head to purify yourself. Immediately thereafter
you can embrace me.”
Asura, besides himself looking at the celestial beauty of Rambhā, rubbed
the cow’s urine on his head vigorously. That moment, according to the
precept of the boon, he was burnt and reduced to ashes.
