2 | 2. Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Vārāha and destroyed Hiranyāksha. Hiranyāksha's mother, wife, and sons were devastated. Hiranyakashipu called them together and began to console them. |
3 | 3. "My brother is dead. He was a hero. For a warrior, it is better to die a heroic death in battle. Through this, he has attained the heaven of heroes. That is his pride. Therefore, no one should grieve over his death. The relationships we see in this world are like those of a water pandal—a temporary shelter providing shade and water to weary travelers." |
4. | 4. What is meant by a 'water pandal' relationship? Two travelers, journeying in different directions, stop at the same water pandal to quench their thirst. While there, they acknowledge each other, exchange greetings, and rest as fellow travelers for a while. At that moment, they share a relationship. But once they resume their journeys, their connection ends. Such is the nature of life in this world. |
5 | 5. Living beings take birth in this world from different directions. For some time, they live as siblings, father and son, husband and wife, and in many other relationships within the cycle of samsara, like travelers meeting at a water pandal. Each lives out their karma, fulfills their purpose, and eventually parts ways. |
6 | 6. Hiranyakashipu described worldly relationships as ‘water pandal’ relations—fleeting and impermanent. |
7 | 7. He did not stop there. "The body is mortal, but the soul is immortal. A hunter once went into the forest to catch birds. He placed a ball of ghee-grain under a tree and hid himself. Seeing it, a dove came down to eat. At that moment, the hunter cast a net and captured the dove. |
8 | 8. The male dove saw this and was heartbroken. Unable to bear the sight of his mate being taken away, he followed the hunter. Noticing this, the hunter captured the male dove as well. |
9 | 9. This is what happens to those who grieve excessively over death. The female dove represents the deceased. The hunter is Yama, the god of death. The one who mourns endlessly suffers the same fate as the male dove," explained Hiranyakashipu. |
10 | 10. What a profound realization... Death is inevitable. Every being with a body must perish one day. However, people struggle to accept this truth. But if Hiranyakashipu understood impermanence so well, why did he ask Brahma for the boon of immortality? |
11 | 11. Therefore, Garuda asked Lord Vishnu many questions about the nature of death and what follows. The Garuda Purana is a compilation of these questions. Garuda did not ask because he lacked knowledge but rather for the benefit of the people of the world. |
12 | 12. The incarnation of Garuda itself carries many valuable messages for humanity. There are significant guiding principles we must follow while studying his story. Come, let us meditate on the incarnation of Lord Garuda, the vehicle and emblem of Lord Vishnu. |
13. | 13. The story of Garuda’s incarnation is found in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. It is said that these events took place at the beginning of the Yuga. Among the daughters of Daksha Prajapati were Kadru and Vinatha. They were very close, and Daksha, wishing not to separate them, arranged their marriage to the same sage—Kashyapa. |
14 | 14. Kashyapa was a great sage who possessed knowledge of the past, present, and future. Kadru and Vinatha considered themselves blessed to have such a husband and served him with great devotion. |
15 | 15. One day, before departing for austerities, Kashyapa called Kadru and Vinatha and granted them each a boon of progeny. Hearing this, Kadru wished for a thousand powerful serpents as her sons. |
16 | 16. Vinatha said, "I desire only two sons, but they should be as strong and radiant as a thousand of Kadru’s sons combined." Kashyapa granted their wishes, advising them both to be patient during their pregnancies, and then left for his penance. |
17 | 17. Both remained pregnant for several years and gave birth on the same day. Kadru laid a thousand eggs, while Vinatha laid two. They carefully preserved their eggs. Years later, Kadru’s eggs hatched, and a thousand serpent offspring emerged. Kadru rejoiced and lovingly nurtured them. Seeing this, Vinatha eagerly checked on her own eggs, but they remained unchanged. She grew anxious and envious. Elders say that one should never make decisions in times of worry, anger, or fear, for decisions made in such moments are often wrong. |
18 | 18. Vinatha forgot the nature of her boon. Had she not asked for two sons with the strength of a thousand serpents? Such strength required time to develop. But without considering this, she lost patience and, driven by curiosity, broke one of the eggs. The next moment, she was horrified. Inside was a child—but only half-formed. His upper body had developed, but he had no legs. Vinatha stood frozen in shock. |
19 | 19. The child emerged from the egg and, filled with anger, said, "You were foolish to break the egg before I had fully formed. Because of you, I will now live with a lifelong disability. As a result of your impatience, you shall live a life of servitude. You will become the slave of the one against whom you feel jealousy." |
20 | 20. Vinatha was terrified upon hearing this. She deeply regretted her impulsive action and begged her child for forgiveness. "Is there any way for me to escape my fate?" she pleaded. |
21 | 21. The child pointed to the remaining egg and said, "If you serve Kadru, my brother in this egg will be born in 500 years. He will rescue you from slavery." From that moment, Vinatha began waiting for the birth of the son who would free her from bondage. |
