Garuda Purana Secret – The First City on the Yamapuri Journey.
1. The journey of a soul, as told in the Garuda Purana, to Yamapuri is terrifying to read. But first, we must have compassion for the soul that is trapped in it. Then, there will be a self-introspection: How are we living our lives?
2. The scriptures say, "This body is a chariot drawn by the horses of the senses." Driven by desire, they drag the chariot along its path. The mind, acting as the charioteer, is supposed to control these desires, but instead, it fails and urges them forward, cracking the whip, "Go faster!" The mind forgets the true purpose and responsibilities of life. Eventually, this reckless journey ends in the town of sin. The soul, unaware that "I am neither the mind nor the body," travels to the city of sorrow after death. Failing to control his senses, he is bound and dragged at will by the Yamakingaras (messengers of Yama). Moaning in agony, the soul is forced along the path.
The journey first passes through a forest called Asipatra, filled with trees that have sharp, sword-like leaves. As the soul brushes against them, its body is torn and wounded, making the fateful traveler cry out in pain.
Asi-patra. = அசிபத்ர = Hell where trees have leaves as sharp as swords
அசி¹ aci , n. < asi. 1.Sword,knife; patra  = leaf
3. The first place they reach is Vaivasvata Pattinam, a city of towering mansions. Enormous and terrifying beasts roam the streets, their ferocious howls piercing the sky. The mere sound of these creatures makes the soul tremble in fear. As terror grips it, an unbearable thirst arises. But when the soul searches for water, it finds only boiling lakes, undrinkable and scalding. Hunger and thirst torment the soul. Clouds gather, offering hope for rain, but instead of water, they pour down blood.
4. The soul weeps over its wretched state. "In my earthly life, I never thought such a world awaited me after death." It begins to recall all the wrongdoings of its past life and laments loudly.
Imagine traveling and coming across someone crying—our natural instinct would be to comfort them. But can the Yamakingaras be expected to show mercy? Instead, they rebuke the soul:
"Now you moan, groan and wail. But what good did you do in your lifetime? Did you give alms to the poor and needy? No! Instead, you hoarded wealth that was not rightfully yours. You lived a life of luxury. You cheated the laborer by not paying him fairly. You only cared for your family. Now, are those same family members coming to your aid? Remember, every blow you receive from us is a punishment for your sins!"
Saying this, they drag the sinner forward, bound by ropes.
What answer does the soul have? Is this the first time it is hearing such moral lessons? While alive, had it not heard countless sermons from saints? Had it not read scriptures and books filled with wisdom? But now, what use is all of that?
6. The first fear that arises when reading the Garuda Purana is not about death—it is about life itself. How are we living? How many times have we heard teachings about sin and virtue? If every human being truly understood and lived by them, there would be no sin in this world.
7. The Buddha once said, "Human beings are immersed in the game of desire, like children who do not understand the consequences of sin."
8. A rich man's house catches fire. He has many children playing inside. The fire spreads rapidly, and soon, their room will be reduced to ashes. The rich man rushes in and shouts, "The house is on fire! Run outside!"
9. But the children are too engrossed in their game to respond to his alarm call. Their father’s words do not register, for they do not comprehend the danger of fire. They are unwilling to leave their game unfinished.
10. Time is running out. If there were only one or two children, the father could have carried them out. But with so many, how could he save them all? Then, he comes up with an idea. He shouts, "There is a cart outside filled with new toys!"
11. Hearing this, the children immediately abandon their game and rush to the front yard. The rich man also escapes. The next moment, the entire house is engulfed in flames. The children survive—not because they understood the danger, but because they listened to their father.
12. Like those children, we do not truly understand what sin is or what its consequences are. The Shastras (scriptures) try to teach us awareness through many relevant teachings. If we listen to them and return to the right path, we earn merit. Virtue brings happiness. By nature, life is blissful. Every being seeks joy. The scriptures recommend many rites to attain true happiness. The Garuda Purana vividly describes the suffering of a soul who does not heed the scriptural injunctions. Such a soul undergoes torment for an entire year after death.
As you read this, there is no need to fear. What is truly important is awareness—awareness of living a righteous life on earth.

13. The soul passes through a different city each month on its journey. It consumes the māsika pindam (monthly ritual of offering of food to the departed) and finds brief respite. The Yamakingaras -Yama's Messengers-allow the soul to rest only for a short while before forcing it onward once again.
After traveling through numerous cities, the soul reaches the banks of the Vaitarani River at the end of the sixth month. The sights on the banks of this river are even more terrifying than anything the soul has witnessed thus far, making it scream in horror.
