Garuda Purana Secrets: When the individual The DimensionsOfIndividualSoulsoul leaves the body, it exits through the nine orifices or the hair follicle pores. However, for saints and sannyasis, the skull—called the Brahmarandram—breaks, and life passes through it. Note: Brahmarandram corresponds to the anterior fontanel, or the soft spot on the head of a newborn infant.
Secrets of Garuda Purana: In the Mahabharata, there is a section called
Yaksha Prasnam, a dialogue between Yaksha and Dharma during the exile of
Pandavas. Yaksha Prasna can be considered a book of Dharma. It
encapsulates the essence of all Dharma Shastras and is a treasure trove
of knowledge about the movement of the world. end of 1 Notes: Yaksha = A class of demi-gods / tree spirits. Dharmaśāstras are Sanskrit Puranic Smriti texts on law and conduct. Smriti = written text. Śruti = oral tradition. Yaksha Prasnam is the story of a question-and-answer dialogue between Yudhishthira and a Yaksha in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaksha_Prashna |
2 | 2. Yaksha asked Dharma a total of 124 questions. Dharma patiently answered each one. The most significant question is number 120. Yaksha asked, "What is wonderful in this world?" End of 2. |
3 | 3. Dharma replied, "Day after day, innumerable creatures die in this world and proceed toward the abode of Yama, the god of death. Yet all beings, including the rest of humanity, believe they are going to live forever. They think death will not happen to them. What could be more miraculous than this?" End of 3. |
Every living being born into this world must face death. In fact, death
is one of the states of life. Punarabi Jananam, Punarabi Maranam is the
philosophy preached by Adi Shankara. Notes: Punarabhi = again and again; Jananam = birth; Maranam = death. End of 4. |
5 | 5. That being the case, it is unnecessary to fear death. It is the fear of what happens after death that causes man to stumble. That is why Garuda asks Lord Vishnu to reveal the secrets of death on behalf of all living beings—to dispel that fear and enlighten them. End of 5. |
The Garuda Purana is the answer to the questions posed
by Garuda. End of 6. |
The Lord explains that if one lives righteously and
virtuously, there is no need to fear death. Death will be like liberation. Such
a soul will not have to suffer and wander for a whole year like sinful souls. It
will be reborn into a good and prosperous life. Therefore, the advice of the
Garuda Purana is: “Do good... Do that today.” End of 7. |
8. No matter how many philosophical truths are taught, the fear of death remains in the minds of common people. The uncertainty of that moment haunts all living beings. End of 8. |
That is why Garuda asks Vishnu to reveal the secret of
that final moment. End of 9. |
"Narayana, you spoke of the journey of a human being
after death. At the same time, please explain how the soul separates from the
human body," Garuda requested. End of 10. |
Generally, there are dasa vayu (ten vital airs) in the
body. The moment the body ceases to function, these airs are released.
Specifically, when the air called Dhananjaya is released, death is certain. It
is said that a faint conch-like sound may emanate from the body. End of 11. |
12.
The Subala Upanishad and the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
mention details about the moment of death. According to them, the living entity
resides in the Hridaya Kamalam (Heart Lotus), at its center. Do you know the
size of this living entity? End of 12. |
If you divide a single hair from a cow’s tail into one
hundred parts, then take one of those parts and divide it again into one
hundred, and repeat this process one more time—this is how the Upanishads define
the size of the soul. It is described as "shadada, shadada, shadada." End of 13. |
Thirumoolar says, "Mevya Jeevan Vadivuthu Sollidil,"
meaning that the soul is as subtle as dividing a hair into a hundred thousand
parts. According to his theory, the soul is finer than even the finest fragment
of hair. End of 14. |
The soul exists in a very subtle form and powers the
body. When the senses weaken and become inactive, the soul—through the force of
karma—realizes it is time to leave the body and begins its departure. End of 15. |
16.
On the back of the body are three lines known as
Tristhuna Shopanam. At the moment of death, these three lines churn like curd
and assist the soul in exiting through one of the nine openings. Some say a
faint sound is heard during this process. Lord Vishnu explains this in the
Garuda Purana. End of 16. |
17.
"Garuda, when the soul leaves the body, it exits
through the nine openings or the hair pores. But for saints and sannyasis, the
vertex of the skull, called the Brahmarandram (corresponding to the soft spot in
an infant’s skull), breaks and life passes through it. The soul’s departure is
not the same for everyone. For sinners, it is difficult for life to exit the
body. The soul undergoes many struggles and eventually leaves through the Apana
(anus). In contrast, the soul of a virtuous person exits easily and peacefully,"
said Lord Vishnu. End of 17. |
18. Death typically occurs when Dhananjaya vayu is
released from the body. Upon confirmation of death, it is customary to seal all
nine exit points. The bottom two are closed by tying the toes together. It is
believed that if this is not done, an evil soul may enter the body and defile
it. End of 18. |
19. The body, composed of five elements, becomes stiff
once life departs. Burning or burying the body reunites it with the elements.
Since the body is offered to Agni Deva (Fire God) or to the earth, it is
customary to bathe and purify it. The soul observes all that is done to its
former body. Therefore, it must be treated with respect. That is why it is said
that the deceased should not be slandered in the house of mourning. End of 19. |
20. The soul can sense who among the mourners is genuinely
grieving and who is secretly rejoicing. Therefore, inappropriate or insensitive
comments should not be made in mourning houses. Betel leaves should not be
offered, and criticism of auspicious matters should be avoided. |
21. The soul, while grieving over the rituals performed on
its body, also comes to terms with the fact that this is its destiny. End of 21. |
22 | 22. It is said that the body experiences immense pain when
the soul departs. The soul feels a deep sorrow—similar to the grief one feels
when leaving a home they have lived in for a long time. End of 22. |
23. For the soul, the first ten days after death mark the
beginning of its subtle existence. A stone is placed to perform karma during
this period. The grief of separation from the body and the heat from cremation
torment the soul. Hence, water is liberally offered to quench its thirst. The
stone laid on the first day should remain untouched for ten days; if disturbed,
a ritual remedy is required. Thus, the Garuda Purana warns and guides us. Who, then, must perform the karma for the deceased? The Garuda Purana also addresses this. End of 23. Continue... |
