Once upon a time there was a wise man. He preached about sin in the world and its evils. Concluding his speech, he said, "Today everyone should realize their sins and give them up. Make atonement and seek merit. If you don't, you'll go to hell." |
3 | 3. When he had finished speaking, the others dispersed, leaving only two of them. One of them said with remorse, "Sir, I have understood the consequences of sins. I have committed a great sin in my life. Can I get rid of it?" |
4 | 4. he wise man relaxed him and looked at the other. He said, "Sir, I have not committed any major sins. All I have done are minor sins. For example, petty lies, petty mistakes, playful sins... These are the things I have done. I'm not going to hell, will I?" |
5 | 5. The wise man was silent for a while and then said, "I will answer both of them. First of all, you who have committed a great sin, go and pick up a big rock. When you have committed small sins, go and pick up small stones according to the number of sins you have committed." |
6 | 6. They both went. The man who had committed a great sin soon came and stood up, carrying a huge rock. Having committed only minor mistakes, he began to collect small stones in proportion to the sins he remembered. The number of stones kept increasing. There were too many stones to carry in your hands. |
7 | 7. So he found a sack and put stones in it and carried it. In fact, a bundle of small stones was heavier than the weight of a large rock. |
8 | 8. The wise man looked at both of them and said, "I will show you the way for your sins to be forgiven. Now put the stones back where you took them from." He who had taken the big rock took it and immediately laid it where he had picked it up. |
9 | 9. But the man who carried the small stones hesitated. 'How do we know which stone we picked up and put it in that place?' he stammered. Then the wise man called him and said, "All those who think small sins in this world are like this. Sometimes they become irreparable. There will be a heavy price to pay. So it is better not to commit sin, big or small. Donate to the poor and needy to get rid of the sins you have committed so far. Your sin will be forgiven by God," said the wise man. |
10 | 10. The scriptures of wisdom say that sins are caused by thought, word and deed. They are the karmas that follow the doer. |
11 | 11. "Even if there are many cows in a herd, a calf will find out which is its mother cow and get it right. Similarly, the sin committed by a person will accrue to him no matter how many births he takes," says Garuda Purana. |
12 | 12. Lord Vishnu advises, "Charity should be given to get rid of sins." Some of his explanations about charity are worth knowing. |
13 | 13. "Garuda, there is no big donation like earth donation in this world. It is enough to donate a place the size of a cow's skin; You can be freed from a great sin. |
14 | 14. Similarly, there is no virtue greater than speaking the truth. There is no sin like a man speaking a lie or forging edicts. When one gives charity, it is a great sin to prevent it. |
15 | 15. Some are seduced by fame and donate the earth. Then they lust for it and want to grab it again. This is a great sin. The earth belongs to the recipient. All the fruits of that earth belong to Him. But if it is forbidden to be attained, or if a suit is filed claiming ownership over the land given by the donation, it is a great sin. Such people will go to the hell of 'Raurawadi'. |
16 | 16. If a man earns his livelihood, he who spoils that occupation incurs the sin of killing a thousand kine. On the other hand, the person who guides a person to make a living and creates a job or a job is the one who feeds a family. Hence he will be praised as 'Annadada'. He will get the benefit of doing lakhs of Godanam. Annadada = One who gives food, a charitable person |
17 | 17. Vainadeya... Even the slightest insult to someone can be a great punishment. For example, it is a great mistake to eject a man from a table when he is sitting to eat. If one does so, he will be in a position to struggle for food in that birth itself |
18 | 18. He who ejects a man who is sitting to eat at the time of the banquet and makes him go away with contemptuous words and in regret, he will go hungry for want of food in that life and in the next. |
19 | 19. It is more virtuous not to chase away a single cow with a stick than to donate a hundred cows. He who nourishes cows that have stopped milking will live a contented life in the next life. Some sell the cow as soon as it is donated. That's wrong. It should be kept for at least a year from the time of receiving the donation. Whoever does not do so, but sells it immediately, incurs the sin of eating the flesh of a cow. |
20 | 20. He who usurps the property of temples and monasteries will be ruined under his own eyes. His offspring who robs and insults the humble and the Brahmanas, will fall in the most wretched state. |
21 | 21. The Brahmana who receives gifts must be upright. The charity given to him is as pious and rewarding as ahuthi (oblations) to the demigods in the sacrificial fire. At the same time, giving alms to an illustrious Brahmin who lives without following the Brahmin dharmas is like sacrificing with ashes. |
22 | 22. Brāhmaṇas who receive gifts from others for the removal of sins may get rid of their doshas (sins) by regular japas (prayer) and pious baths. |
A Brahmana should be honest, unswerving from morality, eating no food outside,
saving nothing for tomorrow, and rejoicing in what he has. The charity given to
such a person will yield special benefits. |
24 | 24. On the best days to donate... Solstice, the birth of the month, is auspicious. On that day, the donor will live in prosperity like Sriman Narayana. |
25 | 25. In a way, the best dharma is to treat elders, parents and scholars who know the scriptures. A man's account of sins begins only after he is twelve years old. The sin committed by children between the ages of four and twelve does not belong to them. Instead, it belongs to the parents of the child. |
|
26. If the parents are not
alive for the child who sins unknowingly, then the sin will go to those
who support and nurture the child. Therefore, it is the duty of parents
and foster parents to see that their children do not sin. It is
necessary to know their sin and atone for it. Even if a child is brought
before the king for sinning, the king should not punish the child. But
you can correct it," said Lord Viṣṇu. Continue... |
