| 2. திருமாலிடம் கருடன் கேட்ட வினோத வரம்! இந்த உலகில் எளிதில் தீர்க்க முடியாத பகைகளில் ஒன்று சகோதர யுத்தம். பகவான் கிருஷ்ணர் சமாதானம் செய்தும் தவிர்க்க முடியாமல் நிகழ்ந்த மகாபாரத யுத்தமே அதற்குச் சாட்சி. சகோதரர்களில் ஒருவர் மற்றொரு வரை அடிமைப்படுத்தியும் அவரை ஏமாற்றியும் வாழவேண்டும் என்று ஆசைப்படும் குணம் ஆதிமனிதன் இடத்திலிருந்தே வருகிறது. | 2. Vibhavasu and Supratika are brothers. Their father had a lot of property. After his death, the two had to share the property. Vibhava said, "I am the elder, so I want more of it." But Supratika said, "That is not possible. The younger one should inherit the most wealth." The argument between the two went on and on. |
| 6.இதில் ஆச்சர்யம் என்னவென்றால், சொத்துக்காகச் சண்டை போடும் இந்த இருவரும் தவவலிமை கொண்டவர்கள். ஆனாலும் இந்த உலகில் உண்மை எது என்னும் ஞானம் கைகூடாததால் தேவையற்ற ஆணவத்தில் சண்டையிட்டனர். | 6. What is surprising is that these two men who fight for property are strong on penance. But since they did not have the wisdom to know the truth in this world, they were egotistical and fought with each other unnecessarily. |
| 7.ஒருகட்டத்தில் இருவருக்குமே பொறுமை போனது. சுப்ரதீகன் விபாவசுவைப் பார்த்து, “இப்படி மதம் பிடித்த யானைபோல் சண்டையிடுகிறாயே, நீ யானையாகப் போ” என்று சாபம் விட்டார். அதைக் கேட்ட விபாவசுவும், “ஒரு மூர்க்கமான ஆமையைப் போலப் பேசும் நீ ஆமையாகப் போ” என்று சாபமிட்டார். இருவரின் சாபமும் பலித்தது. இருவரும் யானையாகவும் ஆமையாகவும் மாறினர். | 7. At one point, both of them lost their patience. Supratika cursed Vibhavasu, saying, "You are fighting like a mad elephant, you become an elephant." Hearing this, Vibhavasu cursed, "You who speak like a fierce and obstinate tortoise, become a tortoise." The curses of both came true. Both became elephants and tortoises. |
| 8.உருவம்தான் மாறியதே தவிர
குணம் மாறவில்லை. இரண்டும் ஒன்றுக்கொண்டு சண்டையிட்டுக் கொண்டன.
அவற்றைத்தான் கருடன் உண்ண வந்திருக்கிறார். கருடன் கீழே இறங்குவதைப் போலப்
பறந்து யானையையும் ஆமையையும் தன் இரு கால்களில் பற்றிக்கொண்டார். பின் உயரே
பறந்து, வசதியாக அவற்றை அமர்ந்து உண்ண ஓரிடம் தேடினார். தூரத்தில் ஓர்
உயர்ந்த ஆலமரம் தெரிந்தது. அதில் சென்று அமர முடிவு செய்தார். |
8. It was the form that changed, not the character. The two fought with each other. They are what Garuda has come to eat. Garuda flew down and caught the elephant and the tortoise on his two legs. Then he flew high and looked for a place to sit and eat them in comfort. A tall banyan tree could be seen in the distance. He decided to go and sit in it. |
| 9. மரத்தில் பெரிய கிளை ஒன்றில் சென்று அமர்ந்தார். கருடன் பிரமாண்ட வடிவினன். கையில் யானையும் ஆமையும் வேறு. இவ்வளவு எடையை ஒரு மரக்கிளை எப்படித் தாங்கும்? மரக்கிளை ஒடிந்து சரியத் தொடங்கியது. | 9. He sat down on a large branch of a tree. Garuda is of gigantic form. Besides, he held an elephant and a tortoise in his hands. How can a branch of a tree bear so much weight? The branch began to snap and sag. |
| 10. அப்போதுதான் கருடன் அந்தக்
கிளையைப் பார்த்து அதிர்ந்தார். அந்தக் கிளையின் அடிப்பாகத்தில் வாலகில்ய
முனிவர்கள் தலைகீழாகத் தொங்கியபடி தவம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்தனர். |
10. It was then that Garuda was shocked to see the branch. At the base of the branch hung upside down the Vālakhilya sages, performing penance. |
| 11. உடனே கருடன் சிறகடித்துப் பறந்து, கீழே கிளை முறிவதற்கு முன் அதைத் தன் அலகால் பற்றிக்கொண்டார். அப்போதும் முனிவர்கள் தவம் கலையவே இல்லை. அலகில் மரக்கிளை, இரண்டும் கால்களிலும் விலங்குகள். செய்வதறியாது தவித்த கருடன், மீண்டும் கந்தமாதன மலைக்கே பறந்து சென்றார். அங்கே இருந்த காஸ்யபர் கருடன் வரும் நிலையைப் பார்த்ததும் அனைத்தையும் புரிந்துகொண்டார். | 11. Immediately, Garuda flapped his wings, flew, and grasped the branch with his beak before it broke down. Even then, the penance of the sages remained intact and undisturbed. With the tree branch in his beak, animals on both legs, and helpless, Garuda flew back to Gandhamadana Mountain. Kasyapa on the mountain, seeing Garuda’s precarious situation, understood everything. |
| 12. வாலகில்யர்களிடம் பிரார்த்தனை செய்தார். “கருடன் இந்த உலகின் நன்மைக்காகச் செல் கிறான். அவனுக்காகத் தாங்கள் தவம் கலைந்து கண்விழித்து உதவ வேண்டும்” என்று வேண்டிக்கொண்டார். வாலகில்யர்களும் கண் விழித்தனர். நிலைமையைப் புரிந்துகொண்டு மரக்கிளையிலிருந்து கீழிறங்கி, காஸ்யபரை வணங்கி கருடனையை ஆசீர்வதித்து, இமய மலைக்குச் செல்வதாகக் கூறிச் சென்றனர். | 12. He prayed to the Vālakhilyas, "Garuda is doing good for this world. For him, you should break your penance, wake up, and help him." The Vālakhilyas also woke up. Understanding the situation, they came down from the branch of the tree, worshipped Kasyapa, blessed Garuda, and went to the Himalayas. |
| 13. கருடனும் பறந்து சென்று மற்றுமொரு மலைச்சாரலில் அமர்ந்து யானையையும் ஆமையையும் தின்றார். இதில் நகைப்பூட்டும் செய்தி என்னவென்றால், கருடனின் கால்களில் இருந்த போதும் சரி, கருடன் வாய்க்குள் செல்லும் போதும்கூட... யானை, ஆமை ஆகிய இருவரும் சண்டைபோட்டுக்கொண்டே இருந்தார்களாம். அதுதான் மாயையின் மகிமை! | 13. Garuda flew and sat on another mountain slope and ate the elephant and the tortoise. The funny thing is that even when the elephant and the tortoise were at his feet or when they went into his mouth, the elephant and the tortoise kept fighting. That is the glory of Māyā! |
| 14.தாங்கள் அழியப்போகிறோம் என்று தெரிந்தாலும் ஆசையைக் கைவிடுவதில்லை உயிர்கள். இரண்டும் கருடனின் வயிற்றுக்குள் சென்று ஜீரணமாகுமட்டும் சண்டையிட்டு அழிந்தன. | 14. Knowing they are going to die, they did not give up their desire. Both of them went into Garuda's stomach and fought till they were digested and perished. |
| 15. கருடன் முழுபலத்தோடு
பறந்து தேவ லோகத்தை அடைந்தார். தேவேந்திரன் தேவர்கள் அனைவரையும் திரட்டி
தேவலோக எல்லையில் காவல் நிறுத்தினார். கருடன் வேகமாகப் பறந்துவந்தார். அவர்
பயணித்து வரும் வேகத்தைப் பார்த்தே தேவர்கள் மிரண்டுபோயினர். அவர்களின்
சிந்தை மயங்கியது. தங்களுக்குள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் தாக்கிக்கொள்ளத் தொடங்கினர். |
15. Garuda flew with full strength and reached the celestial region. Devendra gathered all the Devas and posted them at the celestial border as guards. Garuda flew fast. The celestials were frightened by the speed at which he was traveling. Their minds were confused. They began to attack each other. |
| 16.அந்தக் குழப்பமான சூழலைப் பயன்படுத்தி, கருடன் தேவலோகத்திற்குள் நுழைந்தார். அங்கு, அமிர்தத்துக்குக் காவல்... பௌமனன் என்பவன். கருடன் அவனோடு யுத்தம் செய்து வென்று, அவனைக் கடந்து அமிர்தம் இருக்கும் இடம் நோக்கிச் சென்றார். அமிர்தம் பெரும் பாதுகாப்பு வளையத்துக்குள் வைக்கப் பட்டிருந்தது. | 16. Taking advantage of the chaotic situation, Garuda entered the celestial region. There, Paumanan was guarding the nectar. Garuda engaged in combat with him, emerged victorious, and proceeded towards the location of the nectar. The nectar was stored in a secure ring. |
| 17.வளையத்தின் முதற்கட்டப் பாதுகாப்பாக இரு பாம்புகள் அங்கே இருந்தன. கடும் விஷம் கொண்ட அந்தப் பாம்புகள் கண்களாலேயே விஷம் கக்கும் தன்மை கொண்டவை. கருடன் சாமர்த்தியமாக அவற்றின் கண்ணில் படாமல் மறைந்து அவற்றைக் கொன்றார். | 17. There were two snakes as the first layer of protection of the ring. Those snakes are highly venomous and can spew venom from their eyes. Garuda cleverly killed them by hiding from their sight. |
| 18.அடுத்ததாகப் பெரும் தீ வளையம் ஒன்று சுழன்றுகொண்டிருந்தது. அந்தத் தீயைக் கடப்பது அரிது என்பதை கருடன் உணர்ந்தார். தன் வலிமைகளை அவர் ஒன்றுதிரட்டியபோது, அவருக்கு 8200 தலைகள் தோன்றின. உடனே அவர் பூமி நோக்கிப் பறந்து சென்று அங்கிருந்த நீர் அனைத்தையும் தன் வாயினுள் உறிஞ்சி எடுத்து வந்து தீயின் மீது உமிழ்ந்தார். அப்போது அந்தத் தீ வளையம் முற்றிலும் அணைந்தது. அடுத்த பாதுகாப்பாக ஒரு சக்கரம் ஒன்று சுற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. அதைக் கடப்பது மிகவும் சிரமம். இதை உணர்ந்த கருடன், ஒரு சிறு வண்டின் உருவம் எடுத்துச் சக்கரத்தின் ஒரு ஆரத்துக்கும் -ஆர் ār (p. 240) = Spoke of a wheel-; மற்றொரு ஆரத்துக்கும் இடையே பாய்ந்து சென்று அமிர்தத்தை அடைந்தார். | 18. Next, a great ring of fire was swirling. Garuda realized that it was difficult to cross that fire. When he mustered his strengths, 8200 heads appeared to him. He flew to the earth, sucked all the water into his mouths, and spat it on the fire. The ring of fire was extinguished. The next defense was a spinning wheel. It is very difficult to overcome. Realizing this, Garuda took the form of a small beetle and leapt between one spoke of the wheel and the other and reached the nectar. |
| 19.அமிர்தக் கலசத்தைக் கைகளில் ஏந்திக்கொண்டார். இப்போது மீண்டும் சக்கரத்தைக் கடக்கவேண்டும்! ஆனால் இந்த முறை பிரமாண்ட வடிவம் எடுத்த கருடன் அந்தச் சக்கரத்தை உடைத்துக்கொண்டு வெளியே வந்தார். அப்போது, கைதட்டி கருடனை வாழ்த்தும் குரல் ஒன்று கேட்டது. கருடன் சத்தம் வந்த திசையை நோக்கினார். அது ஸ்ரீமந் நாராயணனின் குரல். | 19. He held the pot of nectar in his hands. Now one has to cross the wheel again! But this time Garuda took a gigantic form, broke the chakra, and came out. Then, a voice boomed accompanied by hand claps and congratulations. Garuda looked in the direction of the sound. It was the voice of Sriman Narayana. |
| 20. “அபாரம் கருடா... உன் பராக்கிரமம் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தோம். உனக்கு என்ன வரம் வேண்டும் கேள் தருகிறேன்” என்றார். பகவானை நேரில் கண்டதும் கருடன் சிலிர்த்துப்போனார். பகவானின் தரிசனமே பெரிய வரம் அல்லவா? அதற்கும் மேல் ஒரு வரமா என்று கருடன் யோசித்தார். பரமாத்மாவின் திருவிளையாட லைப் புரிந்துகொண்டார். பரம்பொருளின் திருவுள்ளம் நிறைவேறும்படி செயல்படுவது என்று முடிவு செய்தார். | 20. "Awesome Garuda... We rejoiced at your prowess. Ask me what boon you want and I will give it to you." Garuda was thrilled to see the Lord in person. Isn't the darshan of the Lord alone a great boon? Garuda wondered if it was more than a boon. He understood the divine play of the Paramatma. He decided to act to fulfill the will of the Almighty. |
| 21.“நாராயணா! நீங்கள் எனக்குக்
காட்சி கொடுத்ததில் மகிழ்ச்சி. நான் உங்களுக்கு ஒரு வரம் தருகிறேன்”
என்றார். கருடன் பகவானோடு எப்போதும் இருக்கும் நித்திய சூரிகளில் ஒருவர்.
அவர், இந்தப் பூவுலகில் அவதாரம் செய்தது ஒரு விளையாடல். மக்களுக்காக
வெளிப்பட்ட தருணம். மற்றபடி அவர் வாசம் செய்ய வேண்டியது பகவானோடுதானே...
பகவான் திருவாய் மலர்ந்து, “கருடா! நீயே, எனக்கு வாகனமாக இரு” என்றார். |
21.
"Narayana! I'm glad you appeared to me. I will grant you a boon." Garuda
is one of the immortals who are always with the Lord. His incarnation on
this earth was a divine play. A moment of revelation for the people.
Otherwise, he should dwell with the Lord. The Lord smiled and said,
"Garuda! Be my vehicle." |
| 22. அப்போது மனம் மகிழ்ந்த கருடன், தானும் ஒரு பிரார்த்தனையை முன்வைத்தார். “சுவாமி, நான் வாகனமாகிறேன். ஆனால் நான் எப்போதும் உங்களுக்கு மேலே இருக்க வேண்டும்” என்று கேட்டார். அது எப்படி வாகனம் ஒருவருக்கு மேல் இருக்க முடியும்? | 22. Garuda was pleased and put forth a supplication. "Swami, I will become the vehicle. But I must always be above you." How can the vehicle be above the occupant? |
| 23. பகவான் புன்னகையோடு, “அப்படியே ஆகட்டும். இனி நீ எனக்குக் கொடியாகத் திகழ்வாய்” என்று வரம் தந்தார். கருடன் மனம் மகிழ்ந்தார். அன்று பெற்ற வரத்தின் பலனாக, இன்றும் பெருமாள் கோயில் கொண்டிருக்கும் சக இடங்களிலும் பெருமாளின் கொடியாகி நின்று அருள்பாலிக்கிறார் கருடன். | 23. The Lord smiled and said, "So be it. Now you will be my flag." Garuda was pleased. As a result of the boon obtained on that day, Garuda is still standing as the flag of Perumal in all the places where the Perumal temple is situated. |
| 24. “சுவாமி, நான் என் தாயை அடிமைத் தளையிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கும் பணியில் உள்ளேன். அதை முடித்துவிட்டுத் தங்களிடம் திரும்பி வந்து தங்களின் வாகனமாகிப் பணி செய்வேன்” என்று கருடன் சொல்ல, பெருமாளும் மகிழ்வோடு விடைகொடுத்தார். | 24. "Swami, I am in the process of freeing my mother from the bondage of slavery. After completing that, I will come back to you and work as your vehicle," said Garuda, and Perumal happily bid him goodbye. |
| 25. இவற்றை எல்லாம்
மறைந்திருந்து பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த இந்திரன், கருடன் பறந்து
செல்லும்போது, அவரின் பின்னால் இருந்து கொண்டு அவர் மீது வஜ்ஜிராயுதத்தை
மீது ஏவினான். வஜ்ஜிராயுதமும் குறி தவறாமல் கருடனைத் தாக்கியது. |
25. Indra, who was watching all this from the hideout, shot the thunderbolt at Garuda from behind as he flew away. The thunderbolt hit Garuda without missing its mark. |
