Renunciation is twofold: physical and mental. Mental renunciation makes one eligible for freedom from rebirth.
Kural 341:
யாதனின் யாதனின் நீங்கியான் நோதல்
அதனின் அதனின் இலன்.
யாதனின் யாதனின் நீங்கியான் Whatever a man relinquished
அதனின் அதனின் நோதல் இலன் No suffering proceeds from it.
341. No suffering proceeds from whatever a man relinquished.
Kural 342:
வேண்டின்உண் டாகத் துறக்க துறந்தபின்
ஈண்டுஇயற் பால பல.
துறந்த பின் ஈண்டு இயல்பால பல after renunciation here and now, many pleasures await.
வேண்டின் உண்டாகத் துறக்க if anticipated for enjoyment, renounce now.
342. After renunciation here and now, many pleasures await. Renounce now if you desire such pleasures.
Kural 343:
அடல்வேண்டும் ஐந்தன் புலத்தை விடல்வேண்டும்
வேண்டிய வெல்லாம் ஒருங்கு.
ஐந்தன் புலத்தை அடல் வேண்டும் You must conquer and kill the five senses.
வேண்டிய எல்லாம் ஒருங்கு விடல் வேண்டும் The desires of the five senses must be renounced altogether.
அடல் = aṭal n. அடு- 1. Killing, murdering. ஒருங்கு = altogether. விடல் = renunciation.
343. You must extinguish the five senses. You must renounce the desires of the five senses altogether.
Kural 344:
இயல்பாகும் நோன்பிற்கொன்று இன்மை உடைமை
மயலாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து.
ஒன்று இன்மை நோன்பிற்கு இயல்பு ஆகும் (Ascetic) Not owning a single object is the nature of austerity.
உடைமை பெயர்த்து மற்றும் மயல் ஆகும் Possession removes (asceticism) and brings back confusion (and desire).
பெயர்த்தல் = போக்குதல், நிலைமாறச்செய்தல். To dispel; to shake from its basis. மயல் = confusion, bewilderment, delusion, desire.
344. (Ascetic) Not owning a single item is the nature of austerity. Possession removes (asceticism) and brings back confusion (and desire).
Kural 345:
மற்றும் தொடர்ப்பாடு எவன்கொல் பிறப்பறுக்கல்
உற்றார்க்கு உடம்பும் மிகை.
பிறப்பு அறுக்கல் உற்றார்க்கு உடம்பும் மிகை Body is excess baggage for those who seek severance from future births
மற்றும் தொடர்ப்பாடு எவன் Why engage in further contact.
345. For those who seek severance from future births, the body is excess baggage. Why should they engage in further attachments?
Kural 346:
யான்எனது என்னும் செருக்குஅறுப்பான் வானோர்க்கு
உயர்ந்த உலகம் புகும்.
யான் எனது என்னும் செருக்கு அறுப்பான் The one who severs the ego of ‘I and Mine’
வானோர்க்கு உயர்ந்த உலகம் புகும் will enter the world above that of the celestials.
346. The one who severs the ego of ‘I and Mine,’ will enter the world above that of the celestials.
Kural 347:
பற்றி விடாஅ இடும்பைகள் பற்றினைப்
பற்றி விடாஅ தவர்க்கு.
பற்றினைப் பற்றி விடா அதவர்க்கு He who clings to and never lets go of his attachments
இடும்பைகள் பற்றி விடாஅ Sufferings cling and never leave.
இடும்பை iṭumpai 1. Suffering, affliction, distress, calamity
347. Sufferings cling and never leave a person who clings to and never lets go of his attachments.
Kural 348:
தலைப்பட்டார் தீரத் துறந்தார் மயங்கி
வலைப்பட்டார் மற்றை யவர்.
தீரத் துறந்தார் தலைப்பட்டார் Those who renounced fully reach the summit
மற்றையவர் மயங்கி வலைப்பட்டார் Others are caught in the net of delusion.
348. Those who renounced fully, reach the summit, while others are caught in the net of delusion.
Kural 349:
பற்றற்ற கண்ணே பிறப்பறுக்கும் மற்று
நிலையாமை காணப் படும்.
பற்று அற்ற கண்ணே பிறப்பு அறுக்கும் At the instance of giving up attachments, rebirth is terminated
மற்று நிலையாமை காணப்படும் Otherwise, an unstable state (rebirth) will appear (on the horizon).
349. At the instance of giving up attachments, rebirth is terminated. Otherwise, an unstable state (rebirth) will appear (on the horizon).
Kural 350:
பற்றுக பற்றற்றான் பற்றினை அப்பற்றைப்
பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு.
பற்று அற்றான் பற்றினைப் பற்றுக Adhere to the one who abandoned all attachments
அப்பற்றைப் பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு To drop all attachments, adhere yourself to that bond.
350. Adhere to the one who abandoned all attachments. To drop all attachments, adhere yourself to that bond.
