Learning is the three r's: reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic, regarded as the fundamentals of education.
Kural 391:
கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்
நிற்க அதற்குத் தக.
கற்பவை கசடு அறக் கற்க Whatever you learn, learn it perfectly
கற்றபின் அதற்குத் தக நிற்க after learning, stand by what you learnt.
391: Whatever you learn, learn it flawlessly; after learning, stand by what you learned.
Kural 392:
எண்ணென்ப ஏனை எழுத்தென்ப இவ்விரண்டும்
கண்ணென்ப வாழும் உயிர்க்கு.
எண் என்ப ஏனை எழுத்து என்ப இவ்விரண்டும் That which is called number and that which is called letter, these two
வாழும் உயிர்க்குக் கண் என்ப for the living soul, are the two eyes.
392. The two called number and letter are the two eyes of a living soul.
Kural 393:
கண்ணுடையர் என்பவர் கற்றோர் முகத்திரண்டு
புண்ணுடையர் கல்லா தவர்.
கண் உடையர் என்பவர் கற்றோர் Those who purport to have eyes are the learned.
கல்லாதவர் முகத்து இரண்டு புண் உடையர் The unlearned have on the face two sores.
393. The learned purport to have eyes; the unlearned has on the face two sores.
Kural 394:
உவப்பத் தலைக்கூடி உள்ளப் பிரிதல்
அனைத்தே புலவர் தொழில்.
உவப்பத் தலைக்கூடி உள்ளப் பிரிதல் அனைத்தே happiness of the meeting of the minds makes one pine at departure (of the participant).
புலவர் தொழில் That is poet’s art.
394. Happiness from the meeting of the minds makes one pine at departure. That is the poet's art (right up the poet's alley).
Kural 395:
உடையார்முன் இல்லார்போல் ஏக்கற்றுங் கற்றார்
கடையரே கல்லா தவர்.
உடையார் முன் இல்லார் போல் ஏக்கு அற்றும் கற்றார். As the poor stand before the rich in despondency, the learned are eager for knowledge
கடையரே கல்லாதவர் The unlearned are the lowest.
கடையர் = Men of the lowest rank or status.
395. As the impoverished stand before the rich in misery, the learned stand eager for knowledge. The unlearned are the lowest.
Kural 396:
தொட்டனைத் தூறும் மணற்கேணி மாந்தர்க்குக்
கற்றனைத் தூறும் அறிவு.
மணல் கேணி தொட்ட அனைத்து ஊறும் To the extent the sand well is dug, the water springs
மாந்தற்கு அறிவு கற்ற அனைத்து ஊறும் to the extent of his education, his intellect flourishes.
396. To the extent, the sand well is dug the water springs up; to the depth of one's education, one's intellect flourishes. (Deeper one digs the sand-well, higher is the gush of the spring water. Higher is the learning, more excellent is the intellect.)
Kural 397:
யாதானும் நாடாமால் ஊராமால் என்னொருவன்
சாந்துணையுங் கல்லாத வாறு.
யாதானும் நாடு ஆமால் ஊர் ஆமால் The learned makes any country his own, so too with any town.
ஒருவன் சாம் துணையும் கல்லாத ஆறு என் Why does one continue unlearned until death.
397. The learned makes any country and any town his own. Why does one continue unlearned until death?
Kural 398:
ஒருமைக்கண் தான்கற்ற கல்வி ஒருவற்கு
எழுமையும் ஏமாப் புடைத்து.
ஒருவற்கு தான் ஒருமைக்கண் கற்ற கல்வி The one who received his learning in one birth
எழுமையும் ஏமாப்பு உடைத்து will obtain his security for seven births.
398. The one who received the learning in one birth (one lifetime) will obtain his security (welfare) for seven rebirths.
Kural 399:
தாமின் புறுவது உலகின் புறக்கண்டு
காமுறுவர் கற்றறிந் தார்.
தாம் இன்புறுவது உலகு இன்புறக் கண்டு Perceiving that the world enjoys what the learned themselves enjoy
கற்று அறிந்தார் காமுறுவர் the learned love learning all the more.
399. Perceiving that the world enjoys what the erudite themselves enjoy, the learned love learning even more.
Kural 400:
கேடில் விழுச்செல்வம் கல்வி யொருவற்கு
மாடல்ல மற்றை யவை.
ஒருவற்குக் கேடு இல் விழுச் செல்வம் கல்வி; A person’s imperishable and great wealth is learning.
மற்றையவை மாடு அல்ல the rest are not gold.
விழுச்செல்வம் = Great fortune, immense wealth. மாடு = gold
400. An individual’s imperishable and great wealth is learning. The rest are not gold.
