Kural 451: சிற்றினம் அஞ்சும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான் சுற்றமாச் சூழ்ந்து விடும். பெருமை சிற்றினம் அஞ்சும் The nobility fears the base. சிறுமை தான் சுற்றமாச் (kin) சூழ்ந்து விடும் The low embraces its kind as its kin. 451. The nobility fears the low. The low embraces its kind as its own kinsmen.	Kural 452: நிலத்தியல்பால் நீர்திரிந் தற்றாகும் மாந்தர்க்கு இனத்தியல்ப தாகும் அறிவு. நிலத்து இயல்பான் நீர் திரிந்து அற்றாகும் The flowing water changes to the nature of the soil மாந்தர்க்கு இனத்து இயல்பு அறிவு (திரிந்து) அதாகும் men’s nature takes on the nature of his associates. 452. The flowing water changes to the nature of the soil; men’s nature takes on the quality of the associates.
Kural 453: மனத்தானாம் மாந்தர்க் குணர்ச்சி இனத்தானாம் இன்னான் எனப்படுஞ் சொல். உணர்ச்சி (p. 406) uṇarcci 1. Mind; 2. Consciousness, perception, understanding, knowledge, feeling; மாந்தர்க்கு உணர்ச்சி மனத்தான் ஆம் As the mind is, so is the feeling இன்னான் எனப்படும் சொல் இனத்தான் ஆம் Who the man is depends on his companions. 453. As the mind is, so is the feeling. Who the man is, depends on his companions (he keeps).	Kural 454: மனத்து ளதுபோலக் காட்டி ஒருவற்கு இனத்துள தாகும் அறிவு. அறிவு ஒருவற்கு மனத்து உளது போலக் காட்டி In appearance, one’s disposition seems to exist in mind இனத்து உளதாகும் but, it lives in the companionship he keeps. 454. In appearance, one’s nature seems to exist in mind; but it also exists in the fellowship he keeps.
Kural 455: மனந்தூய்மை செய்வினை தூய்மை இரண்டும் இனந்தூய்மை தூவா வரும். மனம் தூய்மை செய்வினை தூய்மை இரண்டும் Purity of both mind and deed இனம் தூய்மை தூவா வரும் comes from the purity of his company. தூ = tū = That which is pure. 455. The purity of both mind and deed comes from the purity of his company.	Kural 456: மனந்தூயார்க் கெச்சம்நன் றாகும் இனந்தூயார்க்கு இல்லைநன் றாகா வினை. மனம் தூயார்க்கு எச்சம் நன்று ஆகும் The pure of heart and mind will have good offspring இனம் தூயார்க்கு நன்று ஆகா வினை இல்லை For those with good company no deed goes awry. எச்சம் = offspring 456. The pure of heart and mind will have good progeny. For those with the virtuous company, no deed goes awry.
Kural 457: மனநலம் மன்னுயிர்க் காக்கம் இனநலம் எல்லாப் புகழும் தரும். மனநலம் மன் உயிர்க்கு ஆக்கம் (தரும்) Wellness of mind offers benefits to life. இனநலம் எல்லாப் புகழும் தரும் Wellness of the association brings in praise 457. Wellness of mind offers benefits to life. Wellness of your company brings in praise	Kural 458: மனநலம் நன்குடைய ராயினும் சான்றோர்க்கு இனநலம் ஏமாப் புடைத்து. மனநலம் நன்கு உடையராயினும் Though they have wellness of mind சான்றோர்க்கு இனநலம் ஏமாப்பு உடைத்து The virtuous receive security from the wellness of his company. ஏமாப்பு = Security, safeguard 458. Though they have wellness of mind, the virtuous receive security from the wellness of his company.
Kural 459: மனநலத்தின் ஆகும் மறுமைமற் றஃதும் இனநலத்தின் ஏமாப் புடைத்து. மனநலத்தின் மறுமை ஆகும் Wellness of mind guarantees joy in the next life. மற்று அஃது இனநலத்தின் ஏமாப்பு உடைத்து Besides, wellness of companionship offers security. மறுமை = The next birth, opp. to immai (= இமை = this birth) 459. Wellness of mind guarantees joy in the next life. Besides, the wellness of companionship offers security.	Kural 460: நல்லினத்தி னூங்குந் துணையில்லை தீயினத்தின் அல்லற் படுப்பதூஉம் இல். நல்லினத்தின் ஊங்கு துணையும் இல்லை There is no better help than the wellness of mind. தீயினத்தின் (ஊங்கு) அல்லல் படுப்பதூஉம் இல் No enmity, worse than evil company, exists. 460. There is no better help (friend) than the wellness of the mind. No enmity, worse than an evil company, exists.
