Tirukkural means Sacred Verses, composed by Valluvar, a weaver by profession at 500CE. The subject of these aphoristic 1,330 couplets consists of teachings on Virtue, Wealth, and Love. All people appreciate its universality, secular nature and commonality with their own religious teachings.

Kural 491:

தொடங்கற்க எவ்வினையும் எள்ளற்க முற்றும்

இடங்கண்ட பின்அல் லது.

முற்றும் இடம் கண்ட பின் அல்லது  Unless you find a (right) place to besiege the enemy

எவ்வினையும் தொடங்கற்க; எள்ளற்க  Do not initiate any action; Do not ridicule him (the enemy.

491. Unless you find a place (a plan) to besiege the enemy, you neither ridicule him, nor initiate any action (offensive).

Kural 492:

முரண்சேர்ந்த மொய்ம்பி னவர்க்கும் அரண்சேர்ந்தாம்

ஆக்கம் பலவுந் தரும்.

முரண் சேர்ந்த மொய்ம்பின் அவர்க்கும் Even for the strong warrior facing opposition

அரண் சேர்ந்து ஆம் ஆக்கம் பலவும் தரும் A fort offers multifold gains

முரண் = strength.  மொய்ம்பின் = warrior. அரண் = fortress. ஆக்கம் = gain

492. Even for the strong and seasoned warrior facing opposition, fortification offers multifold gains.

Kural 493:

ஆற்றாரும் ஆற்றி அடுப இடனறிந்து

போற்றார்கண் போற்றிச் செயின்.

ஆற்றாரும் ஆற்றி அடுப The powerless will prevail and conquer

இடன் அறிந்து போற்றிப் போற்றார்கண் செயின் while safeguarding themselves at a safe place and waging war against the adversaries.

 ஆற்றார் = The powerless. அடுப = conquer. போற்றார் = enemy, adversary.

493. The powerless will prevail and conquer while safeguarding themselves at a safe place and waging war against the adversaries.

Kural 494:

எண்ணியார் எண்ணம் இழப்பர் இடனறிந்து

துன்னியார் துன்னிச் செயின். 

இடன் அறிந்து துன்னியார் staying steadfast in the chosen safe location, the attacker

துன்னிச் செயின் attacks from there

எண்ணியார் எண்ணம் இழப்பர் The planners (the enemies) will lose the thought (of combat).

494. Staying steadfast at a chosen safe location, sticking with their strategy, and attacking the enemy, the enemies intending on the conquest of them will give up the thoughts of combat.

Kural 495:

நெடும்புனலுள் வெல்லும் முதலை அடும்புனலின்

நீங்கின் அதனைப் பிற.

நெடும் புனலுள் முதலை வெல்லும்  The croc wins in deep waters

 புனலின் நீங்கின் அதனைப் 'பிற' அடும் Once out of the waters, others win over it.

495. The croc wins in deep waters. Once out of the waters, others win over it.

Kural 496:

கடலோடா கால்வல் நெடுந்தேர் கடலோடும்

நாவாயும் ஓடா நிலத்து.

கால் வல் நெடுந்தேர் கடல் ஓடா A long chariot with sturdy wheels will not run (sail) in the seas.

கடல் ஓடும் நாவாயும் நிலத்து ஓடா The ships that sail in the seas will not run on the land.

496. A long chariot with sturdy wheels will not run (sail) in the seas. The ship that sails in the seas will not run on the land.

Kural 497:

அஞ்சாமை அல்லால் துணைவேண்டா எஞ்சாமை

எண்ணி இடத்தால் செயின்.

அஞ்சாமை அல்லால் துணை வேண்டா No help is needful where there is no fear

எஞ்சாமை எண்ணி இடத்தான் செயின் After all-inclusive (comprehensive)  thinking, perform the action.

எஞ்சாமை = totally

497. No help is needed where there is no fear. After all-inclusive thinking, perform the action.

Kural 498:

சிறுபடையான் செல்லிடம் சேரின் உறுபடையான்

ஊக்கம் அழிந்து விடும்.

சிறுபடையான் செல் இடம் சேரின் A small army if entrenched in a safe place.

உறுபடையான் ஊக்கம் அழிந்து விடும் the large army's motivation will perish.

ஊக்கம் = motivation

498.  A large army's motivation will perish, if a small army is entrenched in a safe place.

Kural 499:

சிறைநலனும் சீரும் இலரெனினும் மாந்தர்

உறைநிலத்தோடு ஒட்டல் அரிது.

சிறை நலனும் சீரும் இலர் எனினும் Though they lack safety and wealth

மாந்தர் உறை நிலத்தொடு ஒட்டல் அரிது the people are better off staying put in their place.

499. Though they lack safety and wealth, such people are better off staying put in their place.

Kural 500:

காலாழ் களரில் நரியடும் கண்ணஞ்சா

வேலாள் முகத்த களிறு.

கண் அஞ்சா வேல் ஆள் முகத்த களிறு The elephant unafraid of the enemies and having spear-like tusks

கால்ஆழ் களரில்  நரி அடும் if its feet are stuck in the mire (mud), the fox will kill it.

500. A  fox will kill a mired elephant, though the latter is unafraid of the enemies and having spear-like tusks.
