Who is greater?
An illustrative
Story
Once there was a dispute between Bhagavan and a devotee.
Bhagavan: I am the greatest because I contain in myself the whole
universe of Mobiles and Immobiles.
Devotee: I took you in via my
ear and contain you in my heart. So, I am greater than you.
That devotee is no other than Nammalvar.
There is a Tattva (principle) in the premise, ‘I took you in by my ear
and contain you in my heart.’
It indicates obtaining Bhagavan’s name (Mantra), receiving religious
instructions through a Guru, retaining Bhagavan in the heart, performing
worship and showing devotion (Bakthi).
Avvaiyar sang to emphasize this theme: It is difficult to describe the
greatness of the servitor of God.
Merit will diminish…
There were no basic essentials for performing Naivaedyam (Offerings) for
evening worship one day in the Sri Krishna Chaithanyar’s Asrama.
Disciple Krishnadasar having obtained from Radhabai next door the things
like rice, milk, sugar…was preparing for the offering.
Krishna Chaithanyar did not know what Krishnadasar did for Naivēdyam
because there was nothing in the house.
Krishna Chaitanya: “Krishnadasa, What did you do for Naivedyam?”
Krishnadasa told him what happened.
Hearing the narrative, Chaitanya Prabhu said, “Did you not put your
misplaced faith in the lady instead of Krishna?
Krishnadasar had no clue (of what he meant).
His thinking was if he put faith
in Krishna, He Himself would have brought them to him.
Understanding it, Chaitanya Prabhu said, “If you kept your faith in and
beseeched Krishna, the lady next door without your asking, would have
brought and given you all your needs. The merit from
spontaneous giving is many times
greater than the merit from fulfilling a request.
Since you received what you asked of her without faith in
Bhagavan’s giving, the earned merit of the woman is diminished.
The mercy of Radhai
Radha Kundam in Brindavanam is the sacred place wherein Radha Devi lived
and spread love. When Swamy
Vivekananda stayed there, he had only one piece of cloth. After he
washed and let it dry, a monkey took it and rested far up on the branch
of a nearby tree.
Swamiji became angry. Not on the monkey!
But on Radha Devi who putting her feet one after another went on
circumambulations! Swamiji
ran towards the forest after saying, “All praise you as the embodiment
of compassion. But, you took away the cloth of this poor man, who came
for Dharsan of you. I am going to the nearby forest and fast unto death.
That blame goes to you.” But will Radhai of the form of love will not
leave him in the lurch?
A witness having seen the incident from the beginning went to the forest
with a piece ochre cloth and a small meal. Giving them, he abruptly took
off. Swamiji’s mind melted.
Wearing the loincloth and having eaten the food, he came out of the
forest.
He could not locate the youth, who came looking for him in the forest.
Besides, he found the drying clothe where he left it drying.
