Kural 61: பெறுமவற்றுள் யாமறிவது இல்லை அறிவறிந்த மக்கட்பேறு அல்ல பிற. பெறுமவற்றுள் = Of those acquired அறிவு அறிந்த மக்கட்பேறு அல்ல பிற = Intelligent children, none greater than obtaining யாம் அறிவது இல்லை = We knew of nothing else 61. Of all acquisitions (blessings), we know of nothing greater than siring (begetting) children with intelligence. |
Kural 62: எழுபிறப்பும் தீயவை தீண்டா பழிபிறங்காப் பண்புடை மக்கட் பெறின். எழுபிறப்பும் தீயவை தீண்டா = For seven births, evil will not touch (afflict) பழி பிறங்காப் பண்பு உடை having blameless character மக்கட்பெறின் = Begetting children 62. Begetting children having blameless character guarantees that seven births remain untouched by evil. |
Kural 63: தம்பொருள் என்பதம் மக்கள் அவர்பொருள் தம்தம் வினையான் வரும். தம் மக்கள் தம் பொருள் என்ப = One’s children are one’s wealth. அவர் பொருள் தம் தம் வினையான் வரும். = His wealth, the result of one’s deeds. 63. One’s children are one’s wealth, which results from one’s deeds (Karma). |
Kural 64: அமிழ்தினும் ஆற்ற இனிதேதம் மக்கள் சிறுகை அளாவிய கூழ். அமிழ்தினும் than ambrosia ஆற்ற இனிதே sweater தம் மக்கள் one’s children சிறுகை small hands அளாவிய கூழ் stirred porridge 64. The porridge stirred by the small hands of one’s own children is sweeter than ambrosia. |
Kural 65: மக்கள்மெய் தீண்டல் உடற்கின்பம் மற்றுஅவர் சொற்கேட்டல் இன்பம் செவிக்கு. உடற்கு to the body இன்பம் joy மக்கள்மெய் children’s body தீண்டல் touching செவிக்கு to the ear இன்பம் joy அவர் his சொல் word கேட்டல் to hear 65. The touching the bodies of one’s children gives joy to the parents. Hearing their words gives joy. |
Kural 66: குழல்இனிது யாழ்இனிது என்பதம் மக்கள் மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர். குழல் flute இனிது sweet யாழ் Lute இனிது sweet என்ப it is said தம் one’s மக்கள் children மழலைச் prattle சொல் word கேளாதவர் The ones who never heard 66. Those who never listened to the prattle of their own children say that the flute and the lute sound sweet. |
Kural 67: தந்தை மகற்காற்று நன்றி அவையத்து முந்தி இருப்பச் செயல். தந்தை Father மகற்கு to the son ஆற்றும் நன்றி doing good deed அவையத்து gathering or assembly முந்தி forefront இருப்பச் remain or be seated செயல் deed 67. The good deed a father can do to his son is to prepare him to sit in the front row of the learned assembly. |
Kural 68: தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது. தம்மின் more than himself தம் மக்கள் One’s own children அறிவுடைமை innate intellect மாநிலத்து in the wide world மன்உயிர்க்கு human beings or humanity எல்லாம் all இனிது sweet 68. That one’s own children have greater intellect (= knowledge or wisdom) is a cause for sweetness (pleasure) to the human race. |
Kural 69: ஈன்ற பொழுதின் பெரிதுவக்கும் தன்மகனைச் சான்றோன் எனக்கேட்ட தாய். ஈன்ற பொழுதின் when giving birth பெரிது greater உவக்கும் feeling joyous தன் one’s மகனைச் son சான்றோன் A wise, learned and respectable man எனக் கேட்ட தாய் When mother hears about 69. When a mother hears about his son being a learned man, her joy surpasses that at his birth. |
Kural 70: மகன்தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன்தந்தை என்நோற்றான் கொல்எனும் சொல். தந்தைக்கு to the father மகன் son ஆற்றும் உதவி giving help (doing filial duty) இவன் his தந்தை father என்நோற்றான் What penance did he do கொல் An expletive எனும் சொல் uttered word. 70. The filial duty of the son to his father is for the world to say what penance (austerity) his father did to deserve such a son. |
