Verses 281-290 By Tiruvalluvar
Veeraswamy Krishnaraj
Kaḷḷāmai (Non-stealing) is not appropriating other’s property. The ascetic does not possess anything to call his own. He survives because of the benevolence of the householder. He may possibly go hungry, and on those occasions, thought of stealing to appease his hunger may pop in his mind. The only way out for the ascetic is to beg for food from the householder. Other people may steal, and it amounts to a crime. But an ascetic should not even think of stealing. The mere thought of stealing to appease hunger is a stain on asceticism. The tenets in this chapter are applicable to all.
