Meera's Graft
Seventh-grade Meera went to grandma’s house in the village. When she was out playing, she picked up the seeds of the Neem tree and saved them in the yellow bag.
Her mother questioned her, ‘’Why are you gathering the Neem seeds?’’ She replied, ‘’Tell you later.’’
The father intuitively observed, ‘’It is customary to apply graft with twigs and leaf.’’ Meera smiled but made no reply.
They were heading home to Chennai, after a one-week stay at Grandma’s house. Meera requested her father, ‘’Dad! When we approach Chennai, stop the car wherever and whenever I ask you. At those stops, by the path, I will scatter Neem seeds. Won’t at least ten of the hundred scattered seeds take root? Grafting beautifies only the house. But seeding brings beauty to the whole town.’’
Mom and dad embraced Mira.

Intelligent Crow
1. A thirsty crow cried and flew a long distance looking for water to slake its thirst. Outside a house it saw a twenty-liter can with water deep inside it.
2. The crow wondered how it was going to quench its thirst. Luckily, the crow carried a cell phone. It took a photo of the can, sent it to its crow-friends on whatsapp group and sought advice. The crow received an assortment of advice: Drop stones in the can; look for a straw in the vicinity; put a hole in the bottom. So were the replies from the other crows. One crow who was known for its preternatural intelligence sent a reply, ‘’Don’t be satisfied with today’s find. All come by the riverside. We will join, dig and remove the silt, thereby others will also get to drink the water.
3. Other crows registered their Likes. The crow by the can dropped everything and flew towards the riverside.

Multicolor

Sandhiya questioned her father, ‘’Dad! Don’t be scientific. Be inventive in your thoughts and answers. Why did God create some birds white, some black and some of different colors?’’ The father advanced many disparate answers but failed to persuade his daughter. He said to his daughter, ‘’Ok, I give up; you give me the answer.’’
‘’As technology advanced, we now have color TVs, and Smart phones. In like manner, When God became aware of advanced technology, he created living forms in colors. Because of absence of technology in the past, he created them in black and white.’’
Saying thus, Sandhiya broke out in laughter.

Clay Piggy Bank

Grandpa was visiting with the grandson Akhilesh and granddaughter Avanthika. He told them stories and slept on the open roof terrace. One day, he told them a story about savings. Avanthika promised grandpa, ‘’We will save from the allowance given to us by our parents.’’
Grandfather promised to buy them each a Hundi (Piggy Bank made of clay).
Akilesh seeing grandpa with the clay Hundis observed, ‘’Grandpa! These Hundis are made of clay. Did you know that supermarket has cartoon Hundis?’’

Grandpa said to Akilesh, ‘’Thos Hundis are beautiful to look at. This clay Hundi goes well with the surroundings and is beautiful. If it breaks, it becomes one with the mud.

Understanding his perspective, both accepted the clay Hundis.

Published:

1. A hunter placed an animal trap in the forest. But unknowingly, he stepped on the trap and suffered great pain as the trap closed shut hard on his foot. A woodcutter, seeing the hunter in pain did not attempt to release the hunter from the trap but with an attitude of incrimination told the hunter, ''Don't you think your hunted animals shook like you with agonizing pain?''
2. The hunter retorted, 'You cut down the trees. Don't you think they have a life of their own?''
3. Hunter countered the woodcutter, 'I cut only dead trees. Do you hunt the dead animals?''
The cool and collected hunter seemed to agree with the woodcutter and said, ''From tomorrow onwards, I will join you cutting the dead trees.''
It was as if the forest was joyous at hearing the hunter's resolve with the rustle of the leaves by a gentle breeze.

Thorny path

1. It was a town perched on the top of the mountain. The high school is at the foot of the hill, some five km from the town. There was no bus service and therefore, most elementary school graduates stopped pursuing further studies. Sangita attends 6th grade.
2. Sangita’s parents paid no heed to the prevailing attitude among other parents, ‘’Why should we send girls down the mountain path to pursue further studies?’’
3. Sangita with the school bag and a small knife on her bid goodbye to her mother. The neighbors questioned her, ‘’Why the knife?’’
4. The girl answered them in a perspicacious manner, ‘’On my mountain path, I cut and push aside the thorny bushes, so that the followers will not have any difficulty.’’

The wind’s language

Holiday excitement came to an end and on June 1st, Ooty and Kodaikkanal had a conversation by the medium of the wind. ‘’Hey Kodai, did the vacation crowd in you place disperse and go home?’’
‘’Yes Ooty! Now only, I had the chance to breathe easy in peace and quiet. It is alright that Homo sapiens (people) come here to enjoy us and take much needed rest and relaxation. But they throw garbage at us, waste the precious water and inflict much suffering.’’
Ooty comforted Kodai saying, ‘’Put up with it a little while. The children accompanying the elders have begun to understand our plight. In a few years, they will take care of us well.’’
‘’Dear friends, did you listen in on the conversation, spoken in Wind’s language?’’

carousel
Tarun, enthused observing the carousel in the Temple Festival grounds, asked his father, ‘’Dad, can we have a spin in the merry-go-round?’’
The father gave Tarun money for a spin in the carousel and went away with his mother for a shopping spree.

In a little while, Tarun returned to his parents and his mother asked for the change, after she asked him whether he had a good time on the carousal.

Tarun said to his mom, ‘’All that money you gave went for the spin.’’
Father was surprised to hear that. ‘’Tarun, when we were passing by carousal, I heard the fare for carousal was Rs 10. Are you forgetful or telling a fib?’’

Tarun, hesitant at first, said, ‘’Not at all dad! A boy was standing alone looking longingly to take a ride on the carousal. I took him along with me. ‘’

Dad complacently, tapped him on the back and said, ‘’You did a good thing. Here, some more money. Have another spin.’’

Strong man's weapon

''Aravind, I told you to cut your nails yesterday. You haven't done it yet,'' yelled his mother with her hands on the hips.
Aravind said, ''I heard from Miss (his fourth-grade class teacher), that for a strong man even a bade of grass is a weapon. That is why I kept my nails in place without clipping them.''
His mother was confused and demanded an answer, ''What is the relationship between the two. Are you planning to scratch a miscreant seeking to fight with you?
Aravind in his attempt to placate his mother said, 'Nothing like that, mom. The biscuit box containing the nail clipper has a lid, too tight to open and I am growing the nails so that I can open the lid easily with the nails.

His mother laughing at his mischievous answer passed her fingers through the hair of Aravind's head and said, 'I won't close the lid tightly. First, go get the nails clipped.'

Harini as soon as she arrived home from school asked her mom rather abruptly, ‘’Mom, will you buy me a parrot?’’
Harini is in the fourth grade. On school days, she goes to and returns from school by the school bus.
‘’Why this urgency,’’ said the mother, as she was sending a reply to the whatsapp group.
Harini justified her request with an argument by saying, ‘’The parrot talks, I gather. As soon as I return home from school, I will speak to the parrot for a while and then go for my reading. The reason is you are always on the phone.’’
Her mother straightened her back and addressed Harini, ‘’Sorry Harini. I will hold plenty of conversation with you.’’ So saying, mom put her phone away.

The monkey desired by Snēhā!

Snēhā, accompanying her father to the bazar street, saw a milling crowd by the roadside.
A baby monkey with an injured leg was on the road. One spectator in the crowd said, ‘’It appears that as the monkey mother and baby crossed the road, the baby was hurt by a vehicle. The mother is missing.’’
Snēhā tried to persuade her father, saying, ‘’Father, can we take this baby home and raise it along with the puppy we already have.’’
Snēhā wiped the injured part of the leg with her hand kerchief and made the baby monkey drink the store-bought coconut water. Soon the officials of the Forest Department came and took the injured baby monkey in their van. The rescued baby monkey eyed Snēhā from the rescue van and bid goodbye to her.

Who is God?

Mom is a patissier in making plum cake. Today also she made my favorite cake.

Five-year-old Suresh and seven-year-old Naveen waited with great anticipation. Suresh said, ‘’Naveen ate more than his share last time. This time, I want more than my share.’’

Naveen protested saying, ‘’I did not eat more than my share.’’

Their mother advised them saying, ‘’Never ever fight like this. Give in. If God were here, he would have told, ‘A little is enough for me. You take more.’

Suresh and Naveen looked at each other and in one voice said, ‘’Does that mean You are the God?  Is that right, mom?’’
